Japani Shyam
Gond-Pardhan paintings are native to Madhya Pradesh and practiced by one of India’s largest tribal communities who are also called Pardhans. The Pardhans, before getting international recognition as painters, were traditional musicians and genealogists of the Gond community. Their paintings are marked by vibrant colours and extreme detailing using patterns made with dots and dashes.

This event forms part of Summer at MAP – an annual workshop series for kids facilitated by the MAP Education team along with external facilitators. In our first edition, we focus on the vernacular artistic traditions of India and meet the artists committed to keeping them alive!
These sessions have limited seats and registration is on a first come, first serve basis. The registration fee per session is Rs. 200 and you can sign up for more than one session.
We encourage participants with any kind of difficulty related to hearing, speaking, learning, etc. to participate in the workshops. If you are the guardian of such a participant, please write to us at education@map-india.org prior to registration and let us know the workshop(s) that is of interest, the nature of the difficulty and the accommodations that may be required. We will try our best to make the necessary arrangements in consultation with you.

Japani Shyam began painting when she was 7 years old, and subsequently won the Kamala Devi award when she was 11. Over the years, Japani has evolved artistically to balance the formidable legacy of her father with her own distinctive style. Japani too narrates stories of nature, but in a style identifiably her own that uses straighter lines and a serene colour palette.
