How do the materials we work with shape the stories we tell about ourselves?

In this workshop, artist Riya introduces participants to ‘Botanical Beings’, beginning with a conversation around her practice, participants will look closely at her work before creating their own works using preserved flowers. Working slowly and intuitively, the session invites participants to engage with the materials through observation, reflection, and play, while exploring making as a practice of presence and care.

Together, participants will consider how the ways we engage with the world can shape what we create, and how the works we make can become reflections of our own ways of seeing and being.

This programme is exclusively for 18–25 year olds.

This session is conducted as part of our engagements for the MAP Youth Collective. The MAP Youth Collective is a community for young people (18-25 year olds) to engage with the arts and culture sector. The collective is for, of and by young people — to explore our shared identities and interests through art.

Riya Bhartia

Facilitator

Riya Bhartia is an interdisciplinary artist born in Calcutta. Her work makes a case for care, towards ourselves and the world around us, grounded in the belief that we are not separate from nature but a part of it. By viewing matter as kin and making as an act of care she explores the ethical dimensions of a material practice. She extends agency and empathy to the materials she works with and the hands that make them. There is a conscious slowness to her process with the desire to grow with the materials rather than extract from them. Her role is to witness and translate the quiet stories nature is trying to tell us. Some explorations include botanical collage, photography, textile, sculpture, watercolour and drawing.
