Have you ever wondered what poetry would look like if it could transcend words and take form as sculptures? Jaume Plensa, the celebrated visual artist and sculptor, invites you to explore this unique concept through his remarkable works. From Dream (2009) to the Crown Fountain (2004) and Together (2015), Plensa’s creations transform physical and visual art into a language of poetry—art that speaks volumes about itself without words.

Join us for a special evening at MAP to meet and hear from Jaume Plensa, whose work is seen in museums and public spaces across the world from installations in London and New York to Taipei and Dubai. Discover what drives his practice, his approach to art and the role he imagines it plays in the world.

MAP is delighted to be a part of BLR Hubba 2024, a city-wide arts and culture festival.

Jaume Plensa

Jaume Plensa is an artist of ideas, materials and sensations. His references embrace literature, poetry, music and thought.

He considers himself, first and foremost, a sculptor, although his creative process has traversed multiple disciplines. His works address the very condition of being: his physical and spiritual essence, his awareness of himself and his past, his codes and dogmas and his relationship with nature.

Literature, psychology, biology, language and history have been essential elements throughout his career. Using a wide range of materials such as steel, cast iron, resins, glass, light, water and sound, Plensa gives physical weight and volume to the components of the human condition and the ephemeral.

Born in Barcelona in 1955, he studied at the Llotja and at Belles Art Sant Jordi.Since 1980 he has exhibited regularly in galleries and museums in Europe, the United States and Asia: Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona, Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, Yorkshire Sculpture Park in England, Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid, MMOMA in Moscow, Musée Picasso in Antibes, MACBA in Barcelona, among many others.

A very significant part of his work can be seen in public spaces around the world, such as the Crown Fountain in Chicago, Roots in Tokyo or Water’s Soul in New York.

He has collaborated in stage designs for Opera and Theatre, in 2023 he was director of stage, scenography and costumes for the play Macbeth at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. Among the many awards received, the Medal of Arts and Letters in France, the Global Fine Art Award in the category of best art exhibition in a public space in the USA and the Velázquez de las Artes in Spain stand out.
