Architectural Ceramics of the Indian Subcontinent: A Vanishing Legacy

The glazed architectural ceramics of the Indian subcontinent, mostly produced during the Sultanate and Mughal periods, are remarkable for their variety of design and technique. It could be argued that the artistic inventiveness, seen in tiles produced in this region rivals, and even surpasses those that are seen in the great production centres of Iran, Central Asia and Turkey. Sadly, what is left today are fragmentary remains as a result of the ravages of time, climate, vandalism and neglect.
