ARTiculate : Three shorts and a conversation:
This event launches MAP’s new series ARTiculate. Directed by well-known filmmaker, Sumantra Ghosal, this series of short films takes a close look at select artworks in the museum’s collections.
The session will premiere three films that deal with select works of Bhupen Khakhar, Mrinalini Mukherjee and Manjit Bawa. The screening will be followed by a discussion between the filmmaker and MAP’s founder-president Abhishek Poddar on the idea behind the series, the filmmaking-process and more.
ARTiculate is a series of short films on selected artworks in the MAP collection. The films hope to engage you into looking deeper into the sometimes curious and often spectacular ways in which art works.
Abhishek Poddar is a prominent collector and patron of the arts in India. He has been collecting art since high school and has created a significant collection of South Asian art, craft and antiquities, including modern and contemporary art and photography.
He is the force behind the upcoming Museum of Art & Photography (MAP), in Bengaluru, where he serves as a trustee and to which he donated the initial leadership gift and a substantial portion of the family’s art collection.
Besides serving on various boards and committees in India, Poddar also serves on the advisory committees of the India-Europe Foundation for New Dialogues, headquartered in Rome and on the Lincoln Centre Global Advisory Council.
Sumantra Ghosal spent the better part of his life making advertising films for his companies Cinematix and Equinox. Now, he makes documentaries.
Noteworthy among his several films on the arts are the two feature-length films: ‘The Speaking Hand’ (on the tabla maestro Zakir Hussain) and ‘The Unseen Sequence’ (on the Bharatanatyam dancer Malavika Sarukkai). In 2017, Sumantra completed ‘The Space Between The Notes’, a documentary on a concert by Zakir Hussain and Niladri Kumar. He also served as creative collaborator with Malavika Sarukkai and wrote the poems for the full-length dance project ‘Thari – The Loom’. His most recent work is ‘Kaifinama’, a full-length documentary film to commemorate the birth centenary of the Urdu poet Kaifi Azmi.
