Conversations with Food

When

June 28, 2026
4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

What do plants remember, and what do they help us remember?

Through poetry, conversation, sensory prompts, and creative reflection, this workshop invites participants to trace personal and collective relationships with the living world. Drawing on memories carried through names, stories, food, and everyday practices, this workshop will explore how ecological knowledge moves across generations and how different ways of knowing the same surroundings can coexist.

This workshop is designed specifically for senior citizens (60+) in conjunction with MAP’s ongoing exhibition Paper Gardens: Art, Botany and Empire.

Afshan Mariam

Afshan Mariam is an educator and writer drawn to the ways land, food, and learning are deeply intertwined. Her work often begins with a simple question: how can attention become action?

Across classrooms, kitchens and farms, she designs learning experiences rooted in reciprocity. Through curriculum design, seasonal zines, and collaborative projects, she explores how food and memory can help us understand our kinship with the Earth. Afshan has conducted workshops at the Serendipity Arts Festival, The Nilgiri Earth Festival, and other community-centred spaces. Her most recent offering, Cooking in Solitude, is a cookbook for those who dare to cook for themselves.

When she is not at her desk or in the kitchen, she is found walking and learning from an animate Earth.
