A series of engagements looking at sensitive storytelling around gender-related issues in India
Only 8% of content—spanning news reports, features, opinion pieces, and primetime debates—focused on gender-related issues, according to a report released by The Media Rumble and UN Women in 2019. The analysis, which examined leading newspapers, magazines, TV channels, and news websites across India, found this statistic during a six-month period in the previous year.
That is fearfully low. A sustained focus on understanding the issues, interests and concerns of women and gender minorities is crucial to undoing the patriarchal systems that bind us. Non-sexist representation that moves beyond outrage cycles and victim shaming is key to reshaping narratives. Sensitive storytelling, in this case, involves centering the voices of women and gender minorities, critically examining growing gender disparities, and employing new, compassionate approaches.
This series at MAP aims at highlighting institutions that challenge the sensationalist and insensitive language and imagery surrounding gender related issues through responsible storytelling.
