Aparna Jayakumar
Fascinated by the human experience, photographers take to the street to document unique and often decisive moments, sharing glimpses of everyday life as seen in the public space while exploring the richness and creative depth of photography. Portraiture, on the other hand, is an intimate subject. Portraits that arrest us capture more than a person’s likeness – a little bit of their personality, their lifestyle or their values, which can be read through their expressions and body language. Street portraits bring these two seemingly disparate styles together. More than just a candid photograph of any person on a street, a street portrait invites us to feel like we’re part of the scene, because it has required the photographer to become part of it.
For the third edition of MAP’s Photowalk series, Aparna Jayakumar will guide participants through the artistic process, sensitivities and challenges of approaching people, and technical expertise involved in producing street portraits. Walking through the Richards Park neighbourhood of Bengaluru, participants will dive into the making of street portraits and gain confidence in taking pictures in public places, while creating arresting imagery in this dynamic environment.
Please note that participants are required to bring their own cameras. Smartphone cameras are welcome too.
We advise you to wear comfortable clothing and shoes for the walk. The exact meeting point will be shared with you post registration.
Limited spots available, please register at the earliest.
If you should have any accessibility needs or questions, please write to access@map-india.org prior to registering and let us know the nature of your difficulty and the accommodations that may be required. We will try our best to make the necessary arrangements in consultation with you.
