Bouke de Vries: Memory Vessels

Stroll into the Subhedar Sculpture Courtyard at MAP, and you will be greeted by Memory Vessels.

Conceptualised and created by the Dutch artist Bouke de Vries, each Memory Vessel is a sculpture made with broken ceramic pieces, housed inside glass vases. These pieces, though unique and individual iterations, are a part of an ongoing creative exploration by the artist that examines the connection between fracture, impact, memory, and repair.

Born in Utrecht, Netherlands, Bouke de Vries studied at the Design Academy, Eindhoven, and Central St Martin’s, London. After working with John Galliano, Stephen Jones and Zandra Rhodes, he switched careers and studied ceramics conservation and restoration at West Dean College. Every day in his practice as a private conservator he was faced with issues and contradictions around perfection and worth.
