This workshop is aimed at opening up one’s musicality, with an emphasis on having fun with composition and improvisation. Join us for a day-long workshop focused on musical games with the band Tinctures.

These carefully curated games will serve as a creative gateway to exploring the fundamental components of music – melody, harmony and rhythm – in a playful and non linear way. The participants will then use the musical games to improvise and compose pieces for a public performance in duo format, joining in the Tinctures concert at the end of the workshop.

Along the way, we’ll also take a look at various examples from Tinctures’ concept-based compositions, and see how consonance and dissonance can be artfully deployed.

Tinctures

Tinctures is an eclectic duo from Bangalore and Berlin that explores the nature of consonance and dissonance on piano and guitar, creating lush and intricate sound-worlds.

Formed by Nishad Pandey (guitar) and Aman Mahajan (piano), the duo is a sonic laboratory, brewing potent tinctures distilled from European classical music, jazz, Indian classical and folk music, and aesthetic, literary and mathematical concepts.

The duo maintains a schedule of regular performances and workshops in India and Berlin. Their debut album Heads and Tales (2021) was described by Rolling Stone as “an important new record in Indian jazz lore.” This was followed by moments, remote (2023), recorded online during the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic, funded by the Goethe-Institut in Germany.
