What does music look like?

RaagRang explores this question in the context of North Indian classical music. In a great concert, as the raga unfolds, the binaries disappear – the musician becomes the raga and the raga the artist. Ultimately, only the music remains.

Visual artist, Dipankar Goswamy attempts to explore this musical process through his traditional paintings that focus on the musician and the music emanating from them. RaagRang visualises one raga from each artist’s diverse oeuvre, with Goswamy having chosen a few raga renditions that have touched him deeply. The pieces present an intimate view of the music and the musicians, enhanced by colours and calligraphic notations that reflect the mood of the music, allowing the audience to absorb the essence of the raga and its relationship with the artist.
