A trio of jazz musicians featuring Radha Thomas with Ramjee Chandran and Akshada Krishnan will reinterpret jazz standards, improvising freely in the genre known as Bebop. Some of the tunes will feature ‘vocalese’, which is the way in which a jazz singer adds lyrics to a horn player’s solo. In this case, Thomas has written lyrics to the solos of the trumpet player Chet Baker. In others, she will ‘scat’ which is a necessary part of a jazz vocalist’s arsenal, that uses nonsensical syllables in improvising to the music — not dissimilar to a Dhrupad singer’s improv.

This event has been conceptualised as part of the programming around artist Jim Lambie’s immersive, site-specific floor installation, Zobop.
