Did you know that India began drinking coffee much before Europe? Yet we recognise the beverage as a colonial import, even in households where grandmothers brewed the beverage in brass filters. Coffee’s trade and cultivation in England’s colonies corresponds in stages with the building of its empire, facilitating novel interactions between people, plants and microbes, radically reshaping ethnobotanical and cultural boundaries.

Join us for a discussion around the fascinating story of coffee, paired with a specially curated tasting menu of some of the finest Coffea canephora around.

This programme is in conjunction with MAP’s ongoing exhibition Paper Gardens: Art, Botany and Empire.
