Join us as we delve into the experiences of photographer Mallikarjun Katakol, who will be in conversation with Suresh Jayaram, Founder of 1.Shanthiroad Collective. The conversation invites us to join Katakol as he takes us through his journey as a photographer.

For over thirty years, his creative spirit and problem-solving ability have helped create compelling images. His experience in graphic design and advertising before becoming a photographer exposed him to the advantages and challenges of different channels. His practice sheds light on his unique approaches to framing and lighting as he works with a variety of themes.

Mallikarjun Katakol

Mallikarjun Katakol is an award-winning professional photographer with vast experience in Advertising, Architecture, Fashion, Lifestyle and Editorial imagery. For the last 30+ years Mallik’s creative spirit and problem solving ability have helped to create compelling images. His repertoire extends from retail products to corporate head-shots; fashion models to architecture – each of these demand unique approaches to framing & lighting. Mallik is a Visual Arts graduate from Mysore University. He received training in the field of Graphic Design and advertising before becoming a photographer – an experience that exposed him to the advantages and challenges of different channels. His pictures have been used across mediums – print to digital; banner to website; newsprint to social media.

Suresh Jayaram

Suresh Jayaram is an artist, art historian, arts administrator and curator from Bangalore. He is the Founder, Director of Visual Art Collective/1.Shanthiroad Studio an international artist’s residency and alternative art space in Bangalore, India. He is currently involved in art practise, urban mapping, archiving, curation and arts education. His keen interest in environmental and urban developmental issues influences his work. He taught Art History at Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat, the College of Fine Arts in Bangalore and later went on to become the Dean from 2005-2007.

He obtained his BFA in painting from the College of Fine Arts, Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat 1990 and MFA from M.S.University, Baroda in 1992 in Art Criticism. Some of his significant work has included- 2012- Curator for Colombo Art Biennale 2012, Colombo, Sri Lanka 2011- Research, curated exhibition and compiled monograph for the ‘Krumbiegel Project’ -A public history/art project that included research, documentation and exhibition that looked at the life of Gustav Herman Krumbiegel a German horticulturist and urban planner of significance in South India. In 2010 Curator for ‘Sethusamudram Project’ – 3 year collaborative art project initiated by Theertha International Artists Collective, Colombo, Sri Lanka and 1.Shanthi Road Studio/Gallery, Bangalore, India that seeks to collectively develop and envision programmes to engage with and address the highly complex and variegated history and emotions surrounding the relations between India and Sri Lanka. In  2010 Art Think South Asia fellow in arts administration, Sculpture Park, Berlin. In 2010 July, he coordinated the South Asian residency for KHOJ as a founder of 1Shanthiroad Studio. In 2008  ANA-Artist Network Asia grant to curate a multidimensional show called REWA, to acknowledge and celebrate the culture of Tibetans in exile in India. In 2004, British Council Charles Wallace India Trust award to work as an artist at the Gasworks Studios, London and in the Working committee of Khoj International Artists Association to organize international artists Residency in Mysore and Bangalore.
