How did one add filters to photos in the 19th century? They painted over it!

As the camera entered the picture in the 1800s, a novel technique of artists painting over photographs was born. This gave the photos a new style and created a layer of shine, highlights and details on black-and-white images.

Now inspired by MAP’s latest exhibition What The Camera Didn’t See featuring works by artist Alexander Gorlizki and the Pink City Studio – where they responded to photographs in our collection – get a chance to dive into your imagination and go wild with this age-old technique. Join us for a painted photography workshop as we reimagine ourselves and create playful narratives around personal photographs.

This session is open to 10 year olds and above. We encourage families to participate together and to reimagine their stories collaboratively.

This event is organised in conjunction with MAP’s exhibition, What the Camera Didn’t See: Alexander Gorlizki / Pink City Studio.
