MAP loans eight vintage photographs featuring women to a presentation of traditional Indian jewellery and these selected historical photographs at the Het Noordbrabants Museum in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.

India has a long and rich jewellery tradition. With the development of photography in India from the late nineteenth century, these traditions have been made visible for a wider audience on the subcontinent and beyond. The photographs showcase several Indian Maharanis who played an important part in the lives of their people, who as rulers achieved great political success, particularly at at a time when female empowerment was not a subject of conversation in the world. Ongoing love for traditional Indian jewellery, strong female role models and advocating female empowerment through education in India led Van Gelder Indian Jewellery and The Bernadette van Gelder Foundation to conceptualise and produce this presentation.
