Join us for an Artist Talk with Sonia Jose, in which she traces her interests, influences and preoccupations that shape her artistic practice. The talk will delve into her early explorations with materiality and ideas of spatiality, in relation to the immediate environment and her body. These interests are further combined with the socio-cultural conditions of the city and her time spent here; merging with her own experiences and histories.

This talk has been organised as part of the larger programming around MAP’s exhibition —- Visible/Invisible: Representation of Women in Art Through the MAP Collection; and has been curated under Thinking Cities, MAP’s public programming theme for the quarter. Through this theme, we explore and reimagine cities through the lenses of space, identity, history, memory and more.

Sonia Jose

Sonia Jose’s art practice relates to personal and social environments and histories. It stems from a need to acknowledge and preserve lived, intimate and overlooked experiences from everyday life. She works with varied media that include drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, video and installation to investigate the relationships between places, architecture, objects and individuals.

Sonia has held several solo exhibitions in India; she has also exhibited her works nationally and internationally in various biennales and exhibitions from 2003 onwards. Being interested in education as an extension of her practice, she has worked at the Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology and at LISAA School of Design, Bengaluru. She has also conducted workshops for children at the British Council and at NGMA Bengaluru.
