Jamini Roy (1887–1972) was one of India’s foremost modernists. He is recognised today not only for his contribution to the revival of Bengali folk art but also for transforming traditional idioms into one of India’s earliest indigenous modernist visual expressions. Trained in the western academic style in the early 1900s, he soon discarded this practice in search of a more ‘Indian’ form of artistic expression.

In a career spanning over fifty years, Roy experimented with a variety of themes. His subjects ranged from depictions of village life (especially that of the Santhal community), animals and birds, to local folklore, religious mythology and even social satire.

ಜಾಮಿನಿ ರಾಯ್ (1887-1972) ಭಾರತದ ಅಗ್ರಗಣ್ಯ ಆಧುನಿಕತಾವಾದಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬರು. ಬಂಗಾಳಿ ಜಾನಪದ ಕಲೆಯ ಪುನರುಜ್ಜೀವನಕ್ಕೆ ಅವರ ಕೊಡುಗೆಗಾಗಿ ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲದೆ ಸಾಂಪ್ರದಾಯಿಕ ಭಾಷಾವೈಶಿಷ್ಟ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಭಾರತದ ಆರಂಭಿಕ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ಆಧುನಿಕತಾವಾದಿ ದೃಶ್ಯ ಅಭಿವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದಾಗಿ ಪರಿವರ್ತಿಸುವುದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಅವರು ಇಂದು ಗುರುತಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ. 1900 ರ ದಶಕದ ಆರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಶ್ಚಿಮಾತ್ಯ ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕ ಶೈಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತರಬೇತಿ ಪಡೆದ ಅವರು ಕಲಾತ್ಮಕ ಅಭಿವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯ ಹೆಚ್ಚು 'ಭಾರತೀಯ' ರೂಪದ ಹುಡುಕಾಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹುಬೇಗ ಈ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸವನ್ನು ತ್ಯಜಿಸಿದರು.

ಐವತ್ತು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ವೃತ್ತಿಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ, ರಾಯ್ ವಿವಿಧ ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರಯೋಗಕ್ಕೆ ಒಳಪಡಿಸಿದರೂ. ಅವರ ಮೂಲ ವಿಷಯಗಳು ಹಳ್ಳಿಯ ಜೀವನ (ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ಸಂತಾಲ್ ಸಮುದಾಯ), ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಪಕ್ಷಿಗಳು, ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ಜಾನಪದ, ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಪುರಾಣಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ವಿಡಂಬನೆಯ ಚಿತ್ರಣವನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಂಡಿವೆ.
