Prominently featured in postcards, nautch girls were often viewed as a threat to society by the colonial government, Christian missionaries, and Indian social reformers. Central to British social gatherings, they inspired awe in some, while others viewed them as threats to familial stability and Victorian-era values. The word ‘nautch’ is derived from the Hindi/Urdu word naatch, meaning dance, and was introduced by the British. The term encompassed not just dancers but also musicians, singers, performers, writers and storytellers. They were traditionally called tawaifs which comes from the Urdu word tawaf, meaning ‘circle around’, based on the spinning movement in Kathak.

ಅಂಚೆಕಾರ್ಡ್‌ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಮುಖವಾಗಿ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿರುವ ನಾಚ್ ಹುಡುಗಿಯರನ್ನು ವಸಾಹತುಶಾಹಿ ಸರ್ಕಾರ, ಕ್ರಿಶ್ಚಿಯನ್ ಮಿಷನರಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಭಾರತೀಯ ಸಮಾಜ ಸುಧಾರಕರು ಸಮಾಜಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಿರುವ ಕಂಟಕವಾಗಿ ನೋಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷ್ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಕೂಟಗಳಿಗೆ ಕೇಂದ್ರವಾಗಿದ್ದ ಈ ಹುಡುಗಿಯರು ಹಲವರಿಗೆ ಒಂದು ವಿಸ್ಮಯವನ್ನು ಉಂಟುಮಾಡಿದರೆ, ಇತರರು ಅವರನ್ನು ಕೌಟುಂಬಿಕ ಸ್ಥಿರತೆ ಮತ್ತು ವಿಕ್ಟೋರಿಯನ್-ಯುಗದ ಮೌಲ್ಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಬಂದ ತೊಂದರೆಯಾಗಿ ಕಂಡರು. 'ನಾಚ್' ಎಂಬ ಪದವು ಹಿಂದಿ/ಉರ್ದು ಪದ ನಾಚ್‌ನಿಂದ ಬಂದಿದೆ. ಇದರ ಅರ್ಥ ನೃತ್ಯ. ಇದನ್ನು ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷರು ಪರಿಚಯಿಸಿದರು. ಈ ಪದವು ಕೇವಲ ನೃತ್ಯಗಾರರನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲದೆ ಸಂಗೀತಗಾರರು, ಗಾಯಕರು, ಪ್ರದರ್ಶಕರು, ಬರಹಗಾರರು ಮತ್ತು ಕಥೆಗಾರರನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಂಡಿದೆ. ಸಾಂಪ್ರದಾಯಿಕವಾಗಿ ಇವರುಗಳನ್ನು ತವಾಯಿಫ್ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದು, ಇದು ಉರ್ದು ಭಾಷೆಯ ತವಾಫ್ ಎಂಬ ಪದದಿಂದ ಬಂದಿದ್ದು, ಇದು ಕಥಕ್ ನಲ್ಲಿನ ತಿರುಗುವ ಚಲನೆಯನ್ನು ಆಧರಿಸಿ 'ಏನನ್ನಾದರೂ ಸುತ್ತುವುದು' ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥ ಇದೆ.
