Ganjifa Box and Cards

Ganjifa is a Persian trick-taking card game which made its way to India through the Mughals in the sixteenth century to regions such as Maharashtra and Odisha, which became centres of card production. Ganjifa comes from the Persian word ‘Ganj’ meaning ‘treasure’. There are typically ninety-six cards in a pack played among three to six players.

The Ganjifa cards in our collection include both Hindu and Mughal iconographies, such as themes from the Ramayana or of the Dashavataras, characters and objects associated with Indian and Mughal royal courts, and fauna.

ಗಂಜೀಫಾ ಎಂಬುದು ಪರ್ಷಿಯನ್ ಟ್ರಿಕ್-ಟೇಕಿಂಗ್ ಕಾರ್ಡ್ ಆಟವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಇದು ಹದಿನಾರನೇ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊಘಲರ ಮೂಲಕ ಮಹಾರಾಷ್ಟ್ರ ಮತ್ತು ಒಡಿಶಾದಂತಹ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳಿಗೆ ಭಾರತಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾಲಿತಟ್ಟ ನಂತರ ಇವು ಕಾರ್ಡ್ ಉತ್ಪಾದನೆಯ ಕೇಂದ್ರಗಳಾದವು. ಗಂಜೀಫಾ ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಪರ್ಷಿಯನ್ ಪದ 'ಗಂಜ್' ನಿಂದ ಬಂದಿದ್ದು ಇದರ ಅರ್ಥ 'ನಿಧಿ'. ಮೂರರಿಂದ ಆರು ಆಟಗಾರರ ನಡುವೆ ಆಡಲಾಗುವ ಪ್ಯಾಕ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ತೊಂಬತ್ತಾರು ಕಾರ್ಡ್‌ಗಳಿರುತ್ತವೆ.
