Dowry Bags and Pot Holders

Indhonis or pot holders are traditional cushioned circular headwear used for carrying and balancing pots of water on the head, primarily by women of nomadic communities in the regions of Gujarat and Rajasthan. Their use dates back to the Indus Valley Civilisation and originated for the purpose of fetching water over long distances. Ornamented indhonis are also used during weddings and other ceremonial occasions or festivals such as Navratri.

Bachakadiyos or bagchi; envelope-shaped textile bags traditionally used in Sindh, Gujarat, and Balochistan, are primarily used by the Rabari community, and are used to hold items like cash, toiletries and ornaments. They are made and used by the bride to store dowry, gifted to the groom; and form an important part of the bride’s trousseau.

The bags here are decorated with kharek embroidery which is distinguished by bright colours, mirrors, tassels and geometric patterns, also seen on indhonis from the same region. The embroidery form is associated with the Sodha, Rajput and Meghwal communities of Kutch, Gujarat.

ಇಂದೋನಿಗಳು ಅಥವಾ ಮಡಕೆಯ ಸಿಂಬಿಗಳು ಸಾಂಪ್ರದಾಯಿಕವಾಗಿ ತಲೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಇಟ್ಟು ಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಮೆತ್ತನೆ ವೃತ್ತಾಕಾರದ ಸಾಧನಗಳು. ಇವುಗಳನ್ನು ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಗುಜರಾತ್ ಮತ್ತು ರಾಜಸ್ಥಾನದ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿನ ಅಲೆಮಾರಿ ಸಮುದಾಯಗಳ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರು ತಲೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ನೀರಿನ ಮಡಕೆಗಳನ್ನು ಒಯ್ಯಲು ಮತ್ತು ಸಮತೋಲನ ಕಾಪಾಡಲು ಬಳಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅವುಗಳ ಬಳಕೆಯು ಸಿಂಧೂ ಕಣಿವೆಯ ನಾಗರಿಕತೆಗಿಂತಲೂ ಹಿಂದಿನದು. ದೂರದಿಂದ ನೀರನ್ನು ತರುವ ಅವಶ್ಯಕತೆಯನ್ನು ಪೂರೈಸುವ ಉದ್ದೇಶದಿಂದ ಇವು ಹುಟ್ಟಿಕೊಂಡವು. ಅಲಂಕೃತ ಇಂದೋನಿಗಳನ್ನು ಮದುವೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಇತರ ವಿಧ್ಯುಕ್ತ ಸಂದರ್ಭಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅಥವಾ ನವರಾತ್ರಿಯಂತಹ ಹಬ್ಬಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬಳಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಬಚಕಡಿಯೋಸ್ ಅಥವಾ ಬಗ್ಚಿ; ಸಿಂಧ್, ಗುಜರಾತ್ ಮತ್ತು ಬಲೂಚಿಸ್ತಾನ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಂಪ್ರದಾಯಿಕವಾಗಿ ಬಳಸಲಾಗುವ ಲಕೋಟೆ-ಆಕಾರದ ಜವಳಿ ಚೀಲಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾಥಮಿಕವಾಗಿ ರಬರಿ ಸಮುದಾಯದವರು ಬಳಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ನಗದು, ಖಾಸಗಿ ಅವಶ್ಯಕತೆಯ ವಸ್ತುಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಆಭರಣಗಳಂತಹ ವಸ್ತುಗಳನ್ನು ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಬಳಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ವರನಿಗೆ ಉಡುಗೊರೆಯಾಗಿ ನೀಡಲಾದ ವರದಕ್ಷಿಣೆಯನ್ನು ಸಂಗ್ರಹಿಸಲು ವಧು ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ತಯಾರಿಸಿ ಬಳಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ; ಮತ್ತು ವಧುವಿನ ಉಡುಗೆಯ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಭಾಗವಾಗಿದೆ.

ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಬ್ಯಾಗ್‌ಗಳನ್ನು ಖರೆಕ್ ಕಸೂತಿಯಿಂದ ಅಲಂಕರಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಗಾಢವಾದ ಬಣ್ಣಗಳು, ಕನ್ನಡಿಗಳು, ಕುಚ್ಚುಗಳು ಜ್ಯಾಮಿತೀಯ ಮಾದರಿಗಳಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿ ವಿಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಈ ವಿನ್ಯಾಸಗಳು ಅದೇ ಪ್ರದೇಶದ ಇಂದೋನಿಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಕೂಡ ಕಂಡುಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಸೂತಿಯ ವಿನ್ಯಾಸವು ಗುಜರಾತ್‌ನ ಕಚ್‌ನ ಸೋಧಾ, ರಜಪೂತ ಮತ್ತು ಮೇಘವಾಲ್ ಸಮುದಾಯಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹೋಲುತ್ತದೆ.
