Mashru Fragments

Mashru, literally meaning ‘permitted’, is a traditional textile, primarily from Western India. Islamic law forbids the wearing of silk, which is not allowed to touch the body. The silk-and-cotton satin weave of mashru, however, makes the cotton weft the part that touches the body, while the silk warp floats on the surface, away from the body. Mashru patterns are commonly geometric.

ಮಶ್ರು ಎಂದರೆ 'ಅನುಮತಿ' ಎನ್ನುವ ಅರ್ಥವಿದೆ. ಇದು ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡುಬರುವ ಸಾಂಪ್ರದಾಯಿಕ ಜವಳಿ ಆಗಿದೆ. ಇಸ್ಲಾಮಿಕ್ ಕಾನೂನು ರೇಷ್ಮೆಯನ್ನು ಧರಿಸುವುದನ್ನು ನಿಷೇಧಿಸುತ್ತದೆ, ಅದು ದೇಹವನ್ನು ಕೂಡ ಸ್ಪರ್ಶಿಸಬಾರದು ಎನ್ನಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಮಶ್ರುವಿನ ರೇಷ್ಮೆ-ಮತ್ತು-ಹತ್ತಿ ಸ್ಯಾಟಿನ್ ನೇಯ್ಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹತ್ತಿಯ ಭಾಗ ದೇಹವನ್ನು ಸ್ಪರ್ಶಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ರೇಷ್ಮೆಯ ಭಾಗ ದೇಹವನ್ನು ಮುಟ್ಟದೆ ಹೊರಭಾಗದ ಪದರದಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಮಶ್ರು ಮಾದರಿಗಳು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಜ್ಯಾಮಿತೀಯ ವಿನ್ಯಾಸದಲ್ಲಿರುತ್ತವೆ.
