Textile Printing Blocks

The ancient craft of block printing dates back centuries and is particularly famous in the regions of Rajasthan and Gujarat. Artisans hand carve intricate designs into wooden blocks often made of sheesham (Indian rosewood), with motifs inspired by nature, geometry and cultural symbols. The labour intensive process of making printing blocks requires highly specialised skill, experience and patience. Carved blocks are then dipped in dye and stamped onto fabric, creating repetitive, vibrant patterns.

Typically, three kinds of blocks are used in combination to create the print — rekh is an outline block, daat is used to fill in details, and gadh is used to create the background of the design, with negative carvings of the daat.

ಬ್ಲಾಕ್ ಪ್ರಿಂಟಿಂಗ್‌ನ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಕರಕುಶಲತೆಯು ಶತಮಾನಗಳ ಹಿಂದಿನದು. ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ರಾಜಸ್ಥಾನ ಮತ್ತು ಗುಜರಾತ್ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗಿದೆ. ಕುಶಲಕರ್ಮಿಗಳು ಕೈಯಿಂದ ಸಂಕೀರ್ಣವಾದ ವಿನ್ಯಾಸಗಳನ್ನು ಶೀಶಮ್ (ಭಾರತೀಯ ರೋಸ್‌ವುಡ್) ನಿಂದ ಮಾಡಿದ ಮರದ ಬ್ಲಾಕ್‌ಗಳಾಗಿ ಕೆತ್ತುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯ ವಿನ್ಯಾಸಗಳು ಅಥವಾ ಜ್ಯಾಮಿತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ಸಂಕೇತಗಳಿಂದ ಪ್ರೇರಿತವಾದ ಆಕಾರಗಳು ಇರುತ್ತವೆ. ಮುದ್ರಣ ಬ್ಲಾಕ್‌ಗಳನ್ನು ತಯಾರಿಸುವ ತೀವ್ರ ಕಷ್ಟದ ಪ್ರಕ್ರಿಯೆಗೆ ವಿಶೇಷವಾದ ಕೌಶಲ್ಯ, ಅನುಭವ ಮತ್ತು ತಾಳ್ಮೆ ಅಗತ್ಯವಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಕೆತ್ತಿದ ಅಚ್ಚುಗಳನ್ನು ನಂತರ ಬಣ್ಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಅದ್ದಿ ಬಟ್ಟೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಪುನರಾವರ್ತಿತ, ಆಕರ್ಷಕ ಮಾದರಿಗಳನ್ನು ರಚಿಸಲು ಒತ್ತಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ, ಮುದ್ರಣವನ್ನು ರಚಿಸಲು ಮೂರು ರೀತಿಯ ಬ್ಲಾಕ್‌ಗಳನ್ನು ಸಂಯೋಜನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಳಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ - ರೇಖ್ ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಹೊರರೇಖೆಗಳನ್ನು ಮೂಡಿಸುವ ಅಚ್ಚು. ನಂತರ ಒಳಗಿನ ವಿವರಗಳನ್ನು ವರ್ಣಗಳನ್ನು ತುಂಬಲು ದಾಟ್ ಅನ್ನು ಬಳಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ದಾಟ್ನ ಋಣಾತ್ಮಕ ಕೆತ್ತನೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ವಿನ್ಯಾಸದ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯನ್ನು ರಚಿಸಲು ಗಾಧ್ ಬಳಕೆಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
