Deccan Pichwai

Pichwais, from the Sanskrit pichh (back) and wai (hanging), are decorative textiles used as backdrops in temples for the idol of Shrinathji, the seven-year-old manifestation of Krishna, worshipped primarily by the Vaishnava Pushtimarg sect established by the Hindu saint and philosopher, Shri Vallabhacharya. Pichwais originating from the Deccan often use gold and silver foil and have a rich colour palette. Shrinathji is typically depicted with one arm raised, as if lifting Mount Govardhan, while the other rests on his waist.

Originating from Nathdwara, the leading pilgrimage site in Rajasthan, pichwai backdrops are changed to reflect the changing seasons and festivals. As Gujarati merchants migrated to the Deccan region, they commissioned pichwais that incorporated local techniques like printing, painting, goldwork and kalamkari. These often featured the gopis of Braj and their madhurya bhava or selfless devotion to Krishna. Mostly hung in the merchant’s homes for personal use, others were gifted to the temples they supported.

ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತದ ಪಿಚ್ (ಹಿಂಭಾಗ) ಮತ್ತು ವೈ (ನೇತಾಡುವಿಕೆ) ನಿಂದ ಬಂದಿರುವ ಪಿಚ್ವಾಯಿ ಎಂಬ ಪದದ ಕಲಾ ರೂಪವಾದ ಈ ಪಿಚ್ವಾಯಿಗಳು, ಶ್ರೀನಾಥಜಿಯವರ ವಿಗ್ರಹಕ್ಕೆ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯಾಗಿ ಬಳಸಲಾಗುವ ಅಲಂಕಾರಿಕ ಜವಳಿಗಳಾಗಿವೆ. ಕೃಷ್ಣನ ಏಳು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ರೂಪದ ಅಭಿವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಇದನ್ನು ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಸಂತ ಮತ್ತು ತತ್ವಜ್ಞಾನಿ, ಶ್ರೀ ವಲ್ಲಭಾಚಾರ್ಯ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿದ ಹಿಂದೂಗಳು ವೈಷ್ಣವ ಪುಷ್ಟಿಮಾರ್ಗ್ ಪಂಥದವರು ಪೂಜಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಡೆಕ್ಕನ್‌ನಿಂದ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಪಿಚ್ವಾಯಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಚಿನ್ನ ಮತ್ತು ಬೆಳ್ಳಿಯ ಹಾಳೆಯನ್ನು ಬಳಸುತ್ತಾರೆ ಮತ್ತು ವೈಭವ ಸೂಚಿಸುವ ಬಣ್ಣಗಳನ್ನು ಬಳಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀನಾಥ ಜೀಯವರನ್ನು ಒಂದು ತೋಳು ಮೇಲಕ್ಕೆತ್ತಿ, ಗೋವರ್ಧನ ಪರ್ವತವನ್ನು ಎತ್ತುತ್ತಿರುವಂತೆ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ, ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಕೈ ಅವರ ಸೊಂಟದ ಮೇಲಿದೆ.

ರಾಜಸ್ಥಾನದ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಯಾತ್ರಾ ಸ್ಥಳವಾದ ನಾಥದ್ವಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಪಿಚ್ವಾಯಿಗಳನ್ನು ಬದಲಾಗುತ್ತಿರುವ ಋತುಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಹಬ್ಬಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಬಿಂಬಿಸಲು ಬಳಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಗುಜರಾತಿ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿಗಳು ಡೆಕ್ಕನ್ ಪ್ರದೇಶಕ್ಕೆ ವಲಸೆ ಹೋದಂತೆ, ಅವರು ಮುದ್ರಣ, ಚಿತ್ರಕಲೆ, ಚಿನ್ನದ ಕೆಲಸ ಮತ್ತು ಕಲಂಕಾರೀಗಳಂತಹ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ತಂತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಂಡಿರುವ ಪಿಚ್ವಾಯಿಗಳನ್ನು ನಿಯೋಜಿಸಿ ಮಾಡಿಸಿದರು. ಇವುಗಳು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಬ್ರಜ್‌ನ ಗೋಪಿಯರನ್ನು ಮತ್ತು ಅವರ ಮಧುರ ಭಾವದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಅಥವಾ ಕೃಷ್ಣನಿಗೆ ನಿಸ್ವಾರ್ಥ ಭಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಂಡಂತೆ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಇವುಗಳನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ಬಳಕೆಗಾಗಿ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿಗಳ ಮನೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನೇತುಹಾಕಲಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಕೆಲವನ್ನು ಅವರ ಮೆಚ್ಚಿನ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಉಡುಗೊರೆಯಾಗಿ ನೀಡಲಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು.
