Portraits in Company School

Company School paintings were a style of miniatures made by Indian draughtsmen for the East India Company in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Trained in local traditional painting styles, they were influenced by British tastes and adopted conventions of Western art to create early ethnographic records of India.

This particular series consists of ten postcard-sized drawings of Englishwomen, with a sparse application of watercolour on each. Likely commissioned by the British in the nineteenth century, in Kota, Rajasthan.

The drawings spotlight the various Company School styles prevalent in India, at the time. The women depicted have distinct hairstyles, curls and buns, with different hair ornaments and accessories. The focus of the portraits varies from just the torso of the subjects, to full-length images.

ಕಂಪನಿ ಸ್ಕೂಲ್ ವರ್ಣಚಿತ್ರಗಳು, ಹದಿನೆಂಟು ಮತ್ತು ಹತ್ತೊಂಬತ್ತನೇ ಶತಮಾನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಈಸ್ಟ್ ಇಂಡಿಯಾ ಕಂಪನಿಗಾಗಿ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಚಿತ್ರಕಲಾವಿದರು ತಯಾರಿಸಿದ ಚಿಕಣಿ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳ ಶೈಲಿಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ಸಾಂಪ್ರದಾಯಿಕ ಚಿತ್ರಕಲೆ ಶೈಲಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತರಬೇತಿ ಪಡೆದ ಚಿತ್ರಕಾರರು ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷ್ ಅಭಿರುಚಿಗಳಿಂದ ಪ್ರಭಾವಿತರಾಗಿ ಭಾರತದ ಆರಂಭಿಕ ಜನಾಂಗೀಯ ದಾಖಲೆಗಳನ್ನು ರಚಿಸಲು ಪಾಶ್ಚಿಮಾತ್ಯ ಕಲೆಯ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯಗಳನ್ನು ಅಳವಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರು.

ಈ ಸರಣಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರ 10 ಅಂಚೆ ಕಾರ್ಡ್ ಗಾತ್ರದ ರೇಖಾಚಿತ್ರಗಳಿದ್ದು, ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದರಲ್ಲೂ ಜಲವರ್ಣವನ್ನು ವಿರಳವಾಗಿ ಬಳಸಲಾಗಿದೆ.. ಹತ್ತೊಂಬತ್ತನೇ ಶತಮಾನದ ಹೊತ್ತಿಗೆ ರಾಜಸ್ಥಾನದ ಕೋಟಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹುಷಃ ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷರಿಂದ ನಿಯೋಜಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕೆ ರಚಿಸಲಾದ ಈ ರೇಖಾಚಿತ್ರಗಳು, ಆ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಚಲಿತದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ವಿವಿಧ ಕಂಪನಿ ಶಾಲೆ ಶೈಲಿಗಳನ್ನು ಗುರುತಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಲಾದ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರು ವಿಭಿನ್ನವಾದ ಕೇಶವಿನ್ಯಾಸ, ಸುರುಳಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ತುರುಬುಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದು, ಕೂದಲಲ್ಲಿ ಧರಿಸುವ ವಿವಿಧ ಆಭರಣಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಅಲಂಕಾರಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಈ ಭಾವಚಿತ್ರಗಳ ಕೇಂದ್ರವು ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯ ದೇಹದ ಮೇಲರ್ಧದಿಂದ ಹಿಡಿದು ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾದ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಚಿತ್ರದವರೆಗೂ ಇದೆ.
