ReReeti Research Study: Needs & Expectations of People with Disabilities for Museums in India
The 20th and 21st centuries have witnessed the rise of disability movements and disability rights across the world. People with disabilities have begun to demand inclusion — in all areas of social, cultural, and political life. The responsibility lies on everyone to ensure inclusion and access for people with disabilities. While these movements have witnessed several gains over the years, inclusion in terms of leisure and recreational opportunities has been relatively sidelined in countries like India.
As access to fundamental necessities such as education, employment, public transport and others is a major hurdle for people with disabilities in India, there is a tendency for leisure and recreation to be relegated to a lower rung in the list of priorities for people with disabilities. Heena, one of the women with disabilities interviewed for the present study, observed, “for People with Disabilities, leisure is an alien word.” However, access to leisure and recreation opportunities are indispensable for the enrichment of the lives of people with disabilities and to secure their holistic inclusions in all avenues of social life.
Our latest study aims to understand the challenges that people with disabilities face while accessing museums and other arts and cultural spaces as well as the expectations that people with disabilities have from museums.

In the past, we have also conducted another research project with ReReeti Foundation, which aims to better understand Indian audience drivers and barriers through exploring their preferences and behavioural patterns, and their engagement with cultural spaces. G20 Cultural Tracker Report – India 2023
As a part of the Culture Working Group under India’s G20 Presidency, MAP, in association with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), Teamwork Arts, Bangalore International Center (BIC), Art Links Learning, and Avid Learning presented two full day symposiums:
