(Detail) Rama and Sita Encounter Each Other in a Garden, 1808, Style A, Workshop A, Artists using stylistic idioms from Awadh, Jaipur and Murshidabad, Private Collection.

Join us as we explore the multiple retellings of the Ramayana from Sita’s perspective. Starting with a twenty minute walkthrough of the Book of Gold: The Kanchana Chitra Ramayana of Banaras exhibition led by MAP’s Curator Kuzhali Jaganathan, where she unpacks the nuances of gender roles in relationships subtly portrayed within the intricate folios of Tulsidas’ Ramcharitmanas.

Following the walkthrough, join us at the  Mazumdar Shaw Auditorium to watch the popular animated film, Sita Sings the Blues. This 2008 American animated musical drama film by Nina Paley presents a distinctive take on the Ramayana, emphasising Sita’s journey and struggles through a contemporary personal lens.

This programme has been conceptualised as part of the larger programming around MAP’s ongoing exhibition Book of Gold: The Kanchana Chitra Ramayana of Banaras.
