An insightful conversation delving into Ram Kumar’s profound impact on Indian modern art will be led by Priya Chauhan, curator of the exhibition Shape of a Thought, alongside renowned visual artist S.G. Vasudev and independent curator Meera Menezes.

Together, they will explore the philosophical depth and emotional intensity that defined Ram Kumar’s abstract works, while also shedding light on the personal journey of this iconic figure of the Progressive Artists’ Group.

Through anecdotes, critical reflections, and a close reading of Kumar’s evolving artistic vocabulary, the discussion hopes to reveal the quiet intensity and introspective spirit that shaped both the man and his masterpieces.

Meera Menezes

Meera Menezes is an art writer and independent curator. She has written extensively on modern
and contemporary Indian art over the past three decades and is the author of V.S. Gaitonde: Sonata
of Solitude. She has anchored the contemporary arts magazine, Art India, in Delhi since its inception
and is a regular contributor to the international arts publication Artforum. She has written for Art
Asia Pacific, The Hindu, Mint, Take on Art, The Indian Quarterly, The Wire, Firstpost and Critical
Collective among several others. Her most recent curatorial projects include Legal Alien, Yuva
Sumbhava, Phantom Limb as well as Shadow Lines: Experiments with Light, Line and Liminality (2019.
She is the organizer of the annual Anant Curatorial Forum that focuses on curatorial practice.
Menezes has done her Masters in German Studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, and has
worked as a TV-journalist and producer at the South Asia Bureau of ARD, Germany’s largest public
service broadcaster, for over a decade.

S. G. Vasudev

S. G. Vasudev, born in 1941 in Mysore, is a renowned Indian painter known for his lyrical, symbolic works. He studied at the Government College of Art and Craft, Madras, where he was influenced by artist K. C. S. Paniker. Early in his career, he received the Government of India’s National Scholarship (1964) and the Lalit Kala Akademi’s National Award (1967).

A founder of Cholamandal Artists’ Village, he lived there until 1988 and now resides in Bengaluru. He has exhibited widely in India and abroad, and served on the Executive Board of the Lalit Kala Akademi.
