Come explore one of the most iconic collaborations in Indian architectural history and gain a deeper understanding of the exhibition, Eckart Muthesius and Manik Bagh: Pioneering Modernism in India. This guided walk by the curator Raffael Dedo Gadebusch will delve into the story of Manik Bagh, a residential palace that redefined Indian modernism and celebrates the visionary partnership between Maharaja Yashwant Rao Holkar II and renowned German architect Eckart Muthesius.

This exhibition is a collaboration between MAP and the Museum of Asian Art, Berlin.

Raffael Dedo Gadebusch

Curator

Raffael Dedo Gadebusch studied Romance and Oriental Studies at the Freie Universität, Berlin, specialising in early Islamic art and literature. He joined the National Museums, Berlin as Assistant Curator in 1997. In 1998, he had curatorial responsibility for the major exhibition event on occasion of the 50th anniversary of India’s independence, working with the Government of India in Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai. In 1999, he was appointed Curator for Indo-Islamic arts and was instrumental in developing a new concept and design for the Museum of Indian Art, Berlin. In 2001, he was appointed Deputy Director of the Museum of Indian Art and in 2006, its acting Director. In Dec 2006, he was appointed Head of South, Southeast and Central Asian collections of the Asian Art Museum, Berlin, board-member of the Gesellschaft für Indo-Asiatische Kunst and co-editor of the Indo-Asiatische Zeitschrift. In 2017, he was appointed coordinator of the Asian Art Collections in the Humboldt Forum, Berliner Schloss, and curated numerous exhibitions featuring ancient, medieval, Indo-Islamic as well as modern and contemporary art from South Asia.

Since 2000, his curatorial activities and research have focused on Indian art from the Mughal period and photography from South Asia (19th century, modern and contemporary). He is the author and editor of several articles and books on South Asian art and photography such as Magische Götterwelten, Potsdam 2000, Picturesque Views, Ostfildern 2007, The Colonial Eye, Berlin 2012, Landscapes of Sri Lanka, Berlin 2013.
