Join us for a guided walk of our latest exhibition Vaanyerum Vizhuthugal: Roots that reach the sky, led by the curator Jaisingh Nageswaran.

Initially exhibited as part of the Chennai Photo Biennale 2024-2025, for MAP this is the first group exhibition dedicated to contemporary photography and lens-based practices. Vaanyerum Vizhuthugal (translating to “Roots that Reach for the Sky”), curated by Jaisingh Nageswaran, brings together the works of twelve lens-based artists of Tamil origin who push the boundaries of photography and visual storytelling.

This guided walk will not only give you context for each of the artists’ work but will also offer insights into the curatorial vision behind bringing these diverse perspectives together. The session will be followed by a meet and greet with the curator and artists featured in the exhibition.

This exhibition is a project by Goethe-Institut Chennai and Chennai Photo Biennale.

The programming is in collaboration with the Goethe Institute/Max Mueller Bhavan Bangalore.

Jaisingh

Curator

Jaisingh Nageswaran is a self-taught lens-based artist and curator from Vadipatti, Madurai, whose practice is deeply rooted in acknowledging the land and language he comes from. By documenting his own family history, Jaisingh explores and highlights broader social implications, creating a dialogue that bridges the personal and the universal. His curatorial journey began with his project, The Lodge, presented at the KG+SELECT at the Kyotographie Festival in Japan in 2023. Since then, he has co-curated two editions of the Vaanam Art Festival in Chennai and participated in the prestigious Khoj Curatorial Intensive South Asia Fellowship.

He also curated Vaanyerum Vizhuthugal, featuring the works of 12 lens-based artists from Tamil Nadu, for the 4th Edition of the Chennai Photo Biennale (CPB). In 2023, he was the recipient of the Musée du Quai Branly Jacques Chirac Photography Award in France, further cementing his reputation as a significant voice in contemporary photography and curation.
