A space that one occupies evokes a strong connection and leaves indelible impressions in one’s mind. When we frequently visit a place, navigate it on a daily basis, or have spent a considerable amount of time growing up in a particular neighbourhood, we develop muscle memory of that space that helps us map it in our minds. How do we interpret these places through drawing? How do we draw the memory of these places and explore the extent of our imagination of them?

Join us, as visual artist Sareena Khemka helps us channel memories and emotions into visually provocative maps. Referencing works based on her own practice, as well as other contemporary artists, the workshop will look at distilling images and ideas of places to create a pictorial map. Through the idea of mapping space, the workshop delves into issues of identity, migration, loss, partition, and the memories of home.

The workshop has been curated under Thinking Cities, MAP’s public programming theme for the quarter. Through this theme, we explore and reimagine cities through the lenses of space, identity, history, memory and more.
