SUMMARY:Visualising Banaras: Architectural Symbolism in the Golden Illustra
 ted Ramayana
DESCRIPTION:Ayodhya Under Rama's Rule\, 1814\, Uttarakanda\, Style A\, Work
 shop B\, Artists employing distinct\, set-like architectural elements\, H.
  47.5 x W. 35.7 cm\, PTG.02210\, Gift of Drs Surjit Kaur &amp\; Anmol Sing
h Mahal – Sikh Heritage Collection. \n\nJoin us for the Bangalore launc
h of MAP’s latest publication\, Book of Gold: The Kanchana Chitra Ramaya
na of Banaras\, with an illustrated lecture by architectural historian\, H
eeryoon Shin\, as she explores the relationship between the Kanchana Chitr
a Ramayana or the Golden Illustrated Ramayana manuscript and the built env
ironment of Banaras and Ramnagar. \n\nArchitecture maintains a strong pre
sence in the manuscript - used both as a framing device and as a marker of
a prosperous kingdom and court. An analysis of the architectural projects
undertaken in the 18th and 19th centuries in Banaras and its resonance wi
th the paintings in the manuscript\, adds a new dimension to the way we lo
ok at the text. These architectural representations are often contemporane
ous to the times when the manuscript was commissioned\, merging the physic
al geography of Banaras with the mythical narrative of the Ramcharitamanas
. \n\nThrough the talk\, Professor Shin will delve into the built context
of the Kanchana Chitra Ramayana\, and the creation of a new sacred landsc
ape through architecture and public performance by the Narayan dynasty of
Banaras. She will look at how these endeavours added to the ‘building bo
om’ in Banaras and helped in carving out a distinct identity for this ne
wly-established royal line.\n\nThis event has been conceptualised as part
of the Book of Gold: The Kanchana Chitra Ramayana of Banaras exhibition. F
or the first time\, this exhibition displays nearly 80 folios from the Kan
 chana Chitra Ramayana.
