SUMMARY:Such Treasure Revived: A Garden Walk and Visit to the Archives
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walkthrough by Dhatri S at the herbal gardens at
the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) campus - a serene green
spot nestled between a maze of labs\, and beloved by students\, staff\, f
aculty\, and resident cats alike.\n\nIts roots trace to a groundbreaking e
xhibit in 2008\, where former cell biologist and scholar of Indian botanic
 al-medicinal traditions\, Annamma Spudich\, brought 50 medicinal plants de
scribed in the Hortus Malabaricus and planted a living exhibition in its s
pot. This exhibition\, titled "Such Treasure and Rich Merchandize: Indian
Botanical knowledge in 16th and 17th Century European Books"\, was not onl
 y a unique collaboration between horticulturalists\, artists\, and histori
ans\, but also one of the many growing efforts by the institution to refle
ct on history and society.\n\nAlmost two decades later\, the garden thrive
s\, but how much of a curation remains? And how have those initial ideas g
rown? Discover its story and learn about the Archives at NCBS from Shreeka
nt and Mahesh\, and their work to document contemporary botanical records
amongst its larger catalogue of history of science.\n\nThis programme is i
n collaboration with NCBS\, and in conjunction with MAP's ongoing exhibiti
on\, Paper Gardens: Art\, Botany and Empire.
