Madhubani is a traditional Indian art form made on canvas, cloth or cow dung washed handmade paper. Restricted to only upper caste women in the beginning where they made these paintings on the walls of their homes, it was later taken up by women (and men) across all castes. Learn more about this popular art form, meet Avinash Karn who is making Madhubani paintings relevant to our times, and try making a contemporary Madhubani painting for yourself under his guidance!

This event forms part of Summer at MAP – an annual workshop series for kids facilitated by the MAP Education team along with external facilitators. In our first edition, we focus on the vernacular artistic traditions of India and meet the artists committed to keeping them alive!

These sessions have limited seats and registration is on a first come, first serve basis. The registration fee per session is Rs. 200 and you can sign up for more than one session.

We encourage participants with any kind of difficulty related to hearing, speaking, learning, etc. to participate in the workshops. If you are the guardian of such a participant, please write to us at education@map-india.org prior to registration and let us know the workshop(s) that is of interest, the nature of the difficulty and the accommodations that may be required. We will try our best to make the necessary arrangements in consultation with you.

Learn how to make a contemporary Madhubani painting under Avinash Karn's guidance

Avinash Karn

Madhubhani artist

Born into a family of Madhubani painters in Ranti, Bihar, artist Avinash Karn is the founder of Madhubani’s first art collective, Kachni Bharni Art Group. His paintings are aimed at changing the dynamics of this art form and adopting contemporary narratives drawn from his personal experiences. While Karn’s aesthetic still adheres to the folk form, the paintings themselves are inspired by the world around him.
