MAP is thrilled to loan artworks to the Piramal Museum of Art for its exhibition Pages of a Mind: Raja Ravi Varma, Life and Expressions, a landmark exhibition on the artist and the field of Modern Indian art in general.

Raja Ravi Varma (1848-1906) is a seminal figure within the history of Modern Indian art. An artist who carved his own path by breaking away from traditional artistic modes of working, many consider him to be the starting point in histories of Modern Indian art. Hailing from the royal family of Travancore, Ravi Varma was largely self-taught, yet his paintings reveal a mastery over anatomy and form that is astounding. His popularity was sealed by his ability to reinterpret Indian mythological subjects using his knowledge of Western techniques. Apart from mythological scenes, Ravi Varma excelled in portraits of royals and representations of women in characteristic ethnic costumes. Since he based these representations on live models, his paintings had a never-before seen immediacy. In tune with the taste of the public, Ravi Varma sought to make his paintings accessible to the common man through his oleographs that were produced at the Raja Ravi Varma Fine Art Lithographic Press in Bombay. Till date, Ravi Varma, through his paintings, oleographs and his numerous followers in the fields of fine art, popular art and cinema, continues to hold sway over the visual imagination of the Indian public.

Giving viewers a peek into the life of the artist, his techniques and patrons, this exhibition is roughly divided into sections featuring original paintings, oleographs and art works from the ‘Ravi Varma School’.  For viewers, this will be an opportunity to closely examine art works that have seldom been publicly exhibited in this manner before.
