The Museum of Art and Photography (MAP), Bengaluru, is pleased to announce a 10-day workshop from 20 to 30 September 2019 on the CONSERVATION OF PAPER-II – Prints Drawings and Maps as part of the MAP-Tata Trusts Art Conservation Initiative.

The Museum of Art & Photography’s (MAP) mission is to build, manage and sustain a new museum to exhibit, interpret and preserve a growing collection of art and cultural artefacts, motivated by a belief that museums should play a positive role in society. It seeks to bridge art and community and serve as a catalyst for greater public exposure to the important cultural history of the visual arts in the country.

The Tata Trusts Art Conservation Initiative proposes to establish, develop and strengthen art conservation centres across India, and to create a cohort of trained art conservators. Executed across 5 zonal institutes and one academic institute over a period of four years, one of the objectives of the project is to conduct advanced material conservation training courses that will help further train practising conservators and establish standards of competence in the field of art conservation.
MAP has been selected as the zonal centre for the southern region with its geographical outreach to the states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

 


OBJECTIVE

At the end of the course, each participant will be able to identify different types of prints, drawings and maps, express how these works deteriorate, and demonstrate how they can be conserved and restored.

 

TOPICS

‣ The historical development of printing processes, maps and drawings

‣ An overview of prints, drawings and map collections in India

‣ Technical discussion on characteristics of the paper and inks

‣ Visit to studios to participate in various printmaking processes, terminology

‣ Identification of historic prints and drawings

‣ Conservation and restoration of prints, drawings and paper (Case studies and practical sessions)

‣ Mounting and housing techniques

 

CORE TRAINERS

Faculty and experts from across the country.

 

PEDAGOGY

Illustrated lectures; lecture-demonstrations; conservation practicals; studio visits; assessments.

 

EVALUATION

The participants will be assessed daily by the faculty conducting the sessions. The training course will conclude with a final written/practical assessment and viva-voce.

Interested candidates are requested to fill in an application form.
Please also attach previous examples of work done in paper conservation, and a copy of your CV.

A selection panel will hold interviews of the short-listed participants either in person or online. The selected candidates will be informed by email/phone.

‣ Participants should be practising conservators.

‣ The training course is limited to 15 participants.

‣ There is no fee for this training course.
